Artist Statement
For me painting is a meditative process that allows for explorations of material and perception. It is an ongoing journey of discovery. Initially a painting stems from my natural surroundings. My labouring over colour, texture mark-making and line begins a process of communication between my actions and the painting itself. My intuitions and awareness of materiality determine parameters, yet an understanding that there is more to life than what we can see encourages further investigation into new perspectives and techniques. In truth, the paintings are never complete. They are merely pauses, exclamations on a never-ending comparative journey between the natural and the abstract.

When approaching my sculptures, the intentions are the same as in my paintings. The perception is anchored in nature, specifically in the human form. It is a starting point on which to build a scaffold, opening it up to discoveries in the third dimension. If I had to remove a painting from its stretcher and reconfigure it into a sculptural form, it would become characteristically linked to the investigation of human nature and the sublime. Again, the explorations are limitless, despite the finality of the sculptural form. At times a sculpture will be deconstructed and reconfigured to further the developments or experimentations. Being selective or eliminatory is where a silence is applicable in this creative journey.
